Ch.29 Did you think we would just leave?

Comic, The Great Barley and Bay-Lily Circus
March 2, 2020

Recap

"Grrrr," Barley growls, staring at her paws.

Barley pulls at her face. "Barley! No!" Bay-Lily gasps.

"If we stop the show, the eye will know!" Bay-lily reminds her frustrated sister.

"We should go." She whispers to Barley, who now has more tears in her fox skin from her tugging. The rips reveal more bulbous red eyes.

"Oh! they're running out of time...So this dance doesn't have to be our last." Gemini holds her throat and whispers.

"I'm HUNGRY, Sister. The dove will be MINE!" Barley pulls at her face again.

Suddenly, the lighting shifts in the tent. Barley stops pulling her face. Bay-Lily gazes up, "Oh no."

The serprent eye reaches the middle of the night sky.

The light the eye casts washes the circus alleyway in a searing bright magenta.

Barley and Bay-Lily look at the tent ceiling. The ominous glow tips them off to the eye's gaze.

"No. You're not my friend." Veil says to Gemini.

"You don't trust me," he says, "and you don't listen to me". The light of the serpent eye starts to wash over them both.

The light illuminates Veil. He POOFS out of his spell in sudden clarity. "OH. You ARE her—ah—"

The facade of the manticore act disappears like smoke blown away. Veil and Gemini face each other as their true selves.

"Veil, we need to go." Gemini says.

"You deserve a better friend than someone who follows orders. But I should listen more, too."

"I don't like when you push. So I pushed you, and you got sucked into this place with me. I'm sorry."

"I'm really sorry." Gemini says. Barley and Bay-Lily crouch behind the circus ring blocks. Gravity lessens in the circus tent as green magic puffs around them.

"...!" Veil exclaims. Gemini holds her head in her hands, "Ungrateful Dove, we're packing up!" Barley yells to Gemini, as she and Veil float in the air from the magic.

The contents of the circus float higher and higher. "We give you everything, no more struggling!" Barley says.

"Stay with us. Practice your juggling. After all, you don't what it's like, really, scrounging to survive—"

"A past of starvation left behind, only to find hungers of a different kind!"

Barley grabs her face once again. "And I'm FAMISHED, damn it! I can still grab you before we vanish!"
